It was a sea of insanity when Whiskey Shivers took The ND by storm during a taping of The Good Music Club back in July. Their music is crazy. The fans, crazier. You can’t be expected to stand still during one of their shows. The energy will drive you wild.
Ordinarily, you don’t typically find things like “roots music” and “hardcore” put together in the same sentence. Hardcore goes with punk, or rock, or hip-hop. But hardcore roots is exactly what Whiskey Shivers gives you, fast and furious, and ready to toss any of your preconceived notions of what Americana should sound like right out the door. So I ask you, how else could I relate my tale of this rambunctious local quintet hellbent on turning roots music on its ear, then sharing it with the world in a new (and chaotic) light?
The band got together back in 2009 with the intention of simply making great music and having fun with it. And from that basic formula emerged an impressive set of original and traditional tunes done with superb musicianship and an almost maniacal enthusiasm. You have everything you need for the party: Fiddle, banjo, guitar, upright bass, washboard and all the guys in the band screaming along.
Get ready for their next rowdy party. Whiskey Shivers plays tonight at Frank, located at W. 4th and Colorado. The bill includes Providence, RI rowdy roots hoodlums Filthy Still, local alt.-country quartet Union Specific, and Port Orchard, WA-based songwriter James Hunnicutt. And please do not let the construction on the street outside Frank deter you. This is something you must experience. Recommended!
