Kelvin Swaby, lead vocalist for English soul-rock outfit The Heavy, is one of eleven siblings in his family. Eleven. On that note, if you ever ask Swaby what kind of music he grew up listening to, he may describe his experience in the following way.

“It was like a Japanese nightclub,” he recently told KUT host Jay Trachtenberg in Studio 1A. “There was different music in every room.” So in one room you’d hear The Specialists, and maybe you’d hear Hendrix blaring out of another. Soul, R&B, pop, rock – an entire spectrum of great stuff to choose from. And it’s all been a major influence upon Swaby.

I’m embracing the bands that have a knack for breathing new life into the most classic sounds, and The Heavy happens to be one such band. They hit the nail right on the head by combining things like modern hip-hop beats with ‘60s R&B and hard rock. Totally heavy on the funk and groove. Their album The Glorious Dead will blow you away.

Don’t miss The Heavy at their show tonight at Red 7, 611 E. 7th St. San Diego indie folk-rockers The Silent Comedy start the night out. Doors at 9 p.m. Highly recommended.
