There are probably few people that know you better than your family. Former Here We Go Magic keyboardist Kristina “Teeny” Lieberson certainly had that in mind when she got her latest project together. Lieberson left Here We Go Magic and recruited her sisters Lizzie and Katherine along with long-time friend Jane Herships and together they are TEEN.
Teeny Lieberson has lent her musical talents to more than a few bands since landing on the NYC music scene back in 2002. She joined up with Here We Go Magic in 2008. The following year Lieberson set down a five-song, solo EP called Little Doods. That record, with its languid, dreamy psych, set the sonic template for what would become TEEN. Last year she (amicably) split with Here We Go Magic to get the nascent project off the ground. With Lizzie, Katherine and Herships on board Teen began crafting their debut full-length In Limbo, which came out August 28 via D.C.’s Carpark Records.
In Limbo picks up where Little Doods left off. The tunes are awash in brooding, fuzzy, synth-y psych-rock of the kind you might find drifting from 80s college radio stations. That may have something to do with the album’s producer, Pete Kember (a.k.a. Sonic Boom) best known for his work with the 80s British, experimental outfit Spaceman 3. Today’s song of the day “Come Back” has a shimmying, light Latin rhythm and farfisa-ish synth and keyboard lines that could’ve easily found a home in the heady days of 80s psych revival or even the 60s themselves. As the song progresses, what begins as a call-and-response between Lieberson and the band, slowly morphs into a serpentine round as they gradually intertwine their vocal lines. It makes for a very cool, and very trippy, tune.
