The 8th annual Fantastic Fest gets underway today at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. The festival is known as being a bit out there, so KUT’s Andy Uhler spoke with Drafthouse founder and CEO Tim League about the film selection process.

Over the years we’ve built a strange little network of folks all over the globe. Somebody’s stationed in Hong Kong, somebody’s stationed in Scandinavia, so there’s this loose network of people who are always looking for oddball, weirdo, exciting films from young, new filmmakers from around the globe.

Every year, in addition to the discovery titles, which is the bulk of the program, we have maybe five or six big-studio, Hollywood films that fall into the genre space, so this year’s we’re kicking off with the world premiere of ‘Frankenweenie,’ the new Tim Burton film, and Tim Burton and Winona Ryder and Martin Landau are all going to be here to kick it off. And we close the festival with the world premiere of ‘Red Dawn,’ the reimagining of the ‘80s classic.
