The NFL season officially kicks off Wednesday night when the Dallas Cowboys take on the New York Giants. The Cowboys have come a long way from the 1960s when they were a struggling expansion franchise competing with the AFL’s Dallas Texans for the hearts and minds of football fans. Longtime fan and author Joe Nick Patoski has written a history of the Cowboys, and it’s as much a tale of Dallas and the times as it is a history of X’s and O’s from first head coach Tom Landry to current owner Jerry Jones.
You wanna understand Texas and Texans, you can do all kinds of things. You can understand horses and cattle, but the best way to understand who we are as a people and what our culture is like is to go to a high school game. And from that basic element, and realization, the modern extension of all that is professional football, and the showcase franchise today of the NFL, for better or for worse, despite their record, is the Dallas Cowboys. They really are the most loved, most hated team in the NFL.
