Capital Metro broke ground today on MetroRapid, a service Cap Metro describes as having the reliability of a train and the flexibility of a bus.
The first route will include more than 40 stations taking riders from North Lamar to South Congress. It will be up and running in early 2014.
Capital Metro spokeswoman Erica Macioge says the company would like add more rail service, but that will take a much larger investment.
“It’s about providing a system that’s well-connected and allows people to get from their beginning to end destinations without ever having to use a car,” Macioge said. “And we’re moving toward that.”
Macioge says 2013 will be a “lean” year for Capital Metro as the company makes some repairs and upgrades.
The Capital Metro Board of Directors will adopt the 2013 budget on Monday. Right now, the budget includes no fare increases or service additions or reductions.
