Just to be perfectly blunt: The UFO Club is basically a pairing of two rather (badass, pardon my language) prominent figures in the local psych scene, Christian Bland of The Black Angels and Lee Blackwell of Night Beats. Both have a great passion for the music they do. And both were interested in taking different approaches to the sound. This meeting of the minds is how The UFO Club got together.
The duo, whose band name is undoubtedly a reference to the short-lived underground London music venue in the ‘60s, set its sights on recreating definitive ‘50s pop sounds combined with ‘60s psych. That’s definitely the feel of their debut full-length album, released on The Reverberation Appreciation Society label. It’s basic pop at its best, reshaped, loud and discordant, featuring Bland and Blackwell’s great guitar work and copious amounts of feedback. Insane and contagious.
Make sure you check out The UFO Club at their album release show tonight at Red 7, 611 E. 7th St. It’s a crazy-good line-up featuring Nightbeats, Holy Wave, Fungi Girls, Cheap Curls and The Wolf. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
