Photo by Ben Philpott/KUT NewsOn the heels of his decisive victory over David Dewhurst for the GOP nomination to fill an open U.S. Senate seat, Ted Cruz was named one of the five headlining speakers that will address the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. at the end of this month.
This morning’s announcement comes just a week after another prominent Hispanic leader, San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, was selected to speak at the Democratic National Convention. Aaron Peña is a State Representative from Edinburg.
“Seeing a Ted Cruz or a Julian Castro speak at a national convention tells the Hispanic population that they can achieve exactly what these men have,” Pena says. “In other words, that the American dream is still alive and can be achieved through hard work, study and hope in the future.”
Republican leaders are still selecting additional speakers. The RNC has yet to announce exactly when Cruz is scheduled to speak.
