Team Spirit: “Phenomenon”
The guy that used to be behind Passion Pit’s sprightly synths is probably the last guy you’d expect to be leading a bratty, spiky power pop outfit. Well, that guy is. He’s Ayad Al Adhamy, and he’s put away his keyboard, cranked his guitar and started a new outfit called Team Spirit.
26-year-old Al Adhamy has, like many successful young, artistic men of his generation, found out that to be successful in the world of music today, one must be a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. He was trained at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and, in addition to his keyboard and percussion duties with Passion Pit, he’s worked as a producer, mixer and engineer for several other artists. Al Adhamy also started his own label back in 2010 called Black Bell Records. The label’s first release was a critically-acclaimed 8-song EP by The Joy Formidable called A Balloon Called Mourning. Black Bell also put out releases by indie-pop groups like Girlfriends, Dom and Stepdad.
Al Adhamy is the driving force behind Team Spirit, but he’s not alone. He’s joined by his former college roommate Roman Tobias Pettigrew on backing vocals and bass, guitarist Cosmo Di Giulio and drummer Dave Weingarten. The band already has a four-song teaser for their upcoming eponymous, debut EP (out this fall) up on their Bandcamp page. But before you head over there, you can take a listen to one of the tunes here with our song of the day “Phenomenon.” From the ringing, power-pop chords that open “Phenomenon” to the hand-clapping, sing-along chorus, it’s a song that should put a smile on your face and make you glad Al Adhamy plugged his guitar back in, and turned it way up.
