State Seeks Help Replanting Lost Pines Forest

August 28, 2012 4:05 pm by: Nathan Bernier

State officials launched an effort this morning to replant the Lost Pines forest in Bastrop where a wildfire last year destroyed millions of trees and scorched almost all of Bastrop State Park.

The head of the Texas Forest Service, Tom Boggus, says they need donations to replant trees on public and private land.

“It’s about a dollar a tree after all’s said and done,” Boggus said. “That’s the easiest way to think about it: a dollar a tree to get these trees. And we’re talking about 4 to 6 million trees over a five-year period that will be reforested out here.”

People can donate at the Arbor Day Foundation website. Bastrop State Park is also offering free admission this Saturday from 1 to 4. Visitors can learn about how the fire affected the area through guided tours and firsthand accounts.
