I, your humble Austin Music Minute maven, have a soft spot for the heavier stuff. As in, the rock stuff, nice and loud, way past 11. So naturally, a band like Smoke and Feathers would definitely make my list of must-see shows. Heavy on the guitars, heavy on the psych levels, and all rock ‘n’ roll.

Musicians and founding members Hunter Calahan and Josh Terry met in late 2007, and as can be expected, they compared notes on their guitar techniques. Both discovered a common thread of heavy Southern rock blended with psychedelic grooves. The stuff that magic’s made of. Bassist Alan Houston jumped on board in 2008, followed soon after by drummer Geoff Guillard, both adding some heavy duty rhythm to make it complete. This a massive sound.

Be sure to see Smoke and Feathers at their show tonight at Red 7, 611 E. 7th St. This is one hell of a bill, if I do say so myself: Local bands Holiday, The Sideshow Tragedy, Wildcat (celebrating their CD release), and Bang Bang Theodores are on the list. Doors open at 8 p.m. Recommended.
