The U.S. Postal Service is recognizing Lady Bird Johnson in the centennial year of her birth. The former First Lady’s White House portrait will be featured on a commemorative “Forever Stamp.”
This design will also have original artwork from stamps from the 1960s. The idea is to get people to continue Lady Bird’s work of beautifying America.
Director of the LBJ Presidential Library Mark Uptergrove believes she accomplished a remarkable amount during her time in the White House.
“She was quiet, but she was so steadfast in her dedication – not only to her husband, but to our country,” Uptergrove says. “Every time I drive down the highway and see wildflowers, I realize: that’s Lady Bird Johnson.”
Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson is one of only five First Ladies to be featured by the USPS. The “Forever Stamp” will be available for purchase nationwide starting in December.
