Even though they don’t much cotton to the term “supergroup” (they made that clear in an interview last week with Spin), there ain’t no better word in the English language to really describe Divine Fits. The group brings together heavy-hitters Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs, drummer Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks and Spoon’s own Britt Daniel. On August 28 the band will release its debut record A Thing Called Divine Fits.

The musical marriage of Boeckner and Daniel is a bit of a no-brainer, and it’s surprising it took this long. Wolf Parade and Spoon share a musical aesthetic that, paradoxically, manages to be bare-bones but deeply textured. Boeckner and Daniel even share a similar vocal timbre–so much so that it’s sometimes hard to distinguish who’s singing what on the new album. With their powers combined, the effect is ten-fold on A Thing. The tunes range from swirly psychedelia to punchy, new wave-y tunes like today’s song of the day–which the band released as a single last week–”My Love Is Real.”

Boeckner takes the mic for “My Love Is Real.” His pleading, hiccupy croon contrasts–and complements–very nicely with the hard, electronic beats and synth tickles on which the track is built. It’s a strange, and enticing, combination of organic and synthetic, lithe and rigid. When he sings, with an almost elegiacal cry, in the chorus, “My love is real. My love is real…” you know the pain is true, even if the electronics hint otherwise. The song loudly proclaims that, no matter what labels you want to stick them with, Divine Fits are most definitely here.
