Austin Activist Arrested for Filming Police

August 27, 2012 5:17 pm by: Kimberly Johnson

The Austin Police Department released details today on why officers arrested Austin activist Anthony Buehler on Sunday. The 35-year-old was arrested for filming police as they detained a man in downtown Austin.

APD Commander Troy Gay says Buehler was interfering with police duties.

“The arrestee was getting very agitated because he was being filmed, to the point where officers had to tell Mr. Buehler again, ‘Sir, you need to step back. You are agitating our prisoner. This is your final warning,’” Gay says. “He refused to do so and he was arrested.”

Gay says the APD respects the First Amendment, but recommends people stand at least 50 to 60 feet away from police while an arrest is being made.

This is the second time Buehler has been arrested for filming police.
