Area Red Cross Keeps Close Eye on Isaac

August 27, 2012 4:29 pm by: Mark Dewey

The Central Texas Red Cross is on alert and closely watching Tropical Storm Isaac. The National Hurricane Center says the storm is moving toward a likely landfall in Louisiana or Mississippi. But it could strengthen to a hurricane.

Although landfall in Texas is still unlikely, Sara Kennedy with the Central Texas Red Cross says three workers have been sent to Washington to coordinate the overall response. And at least one truck and crew has been mobilized.

“These trucks can bring hot meals, cold water to communities in need when the power is out,” Kennedy said. “They can bring cleanup supplies, comfort items, and hygiene kits into communities that have been affected by disaster.”

At Austin Bergstrom International Airport, no flights have been reported canceled because of the storm, but airport officials are recommending that people check their flight status before leaving home. Storm disruptions elsewhere could create problems here.
