With Austin duo Agent Ribbons, I tend to pair two (seemingly) disparate descriptions together: Dainty and deadly. They wear their frocks with a dark Victorian elegance, while the blades are hidden within the folds.

Originally from Sacramento, the two-piece band has toured the country with a number of nationally-known artists, like Girl In A Coma, Camera Obscura, Portugal the Man, and Wanda Jackson, since 2007. Guitarist Natalie Gordon and drummer Lauren Hess create a sophisticated garage rock sound with the perfect touch of cabaret – an aesthetically punk show that is also a theatrical experience, raw while their harmonies are refined. And then comes the pairing of those seemingly disparate descriptions. Gordon and Hess run rampant with a passion for piecing together totally unrelated musical styles, things that you wouldn’t typically imagine going together.

Agent Ribbons is having a cassette EP release show tomorrow night at the Frontier Bar, 2421 Webberville Rd. The bill includes Jason Chronis‘ band JC & Co, and LA/San Francisco songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Adams‘ lo-fi project The Blank Tapes. The music starts at around 10:30 p.m.
