Pedestrian Killed in South Austin

July 31, 2012 4:49 pm by: Andrew Uhler

A man was hit and killed by a car this morning when trying to cross Ben White near Congress in South Austin.

It’s the 45th traffic death this year. Of those, 20 have been pedestrians. Lt. Ely Reyes with the Austin Police Department’s Highway Enforcement Command said there have been an unusual number of pedestrian accidents this year.

“As we all know, this year has been very tragic for the city of Austin for traffic fatalities but especially when it comes to pedestrian deaths on our roadways,” Reyes said.

Reyes says despite this morning’s death, the city’s pedestrian enforcement safety team continues to hand out tickets to pedestrians and drivers. To date, the team has issued more than 1,600 citations.
