The war officially ended last December.
“This is not a political parade, it’s not a statement about the war,” said Connor Kenny, the event’s organizer. “This is all about our veterans. It is all about letting them know that we support them.”
The city of Austin is co-sponsoring the parade. Kenny says organizers were inspired by a similar event in St. Louis.
“There is a sense among veterans that a lot of people really aren’t aware of what happened, of what was going on, of what they had been through. They kind of feel like that while they were at the war, we were at the mall,” he said. “So it’s just very important for us to acknowledge their service, and then to let them know that we have their back.”
The parade starts at 9 a.m. Friday and goes up Congress Avenue to the Capitol. A job and resource fair will follow at the Capitol at 11:30.
