The first time I saw Megafauna live was at the 29th Street Ballroom at Spider House. Since your Austin Music Minute maven has no qualms about rockin’ out, I was front and center by the stage. Just ask guitarist and vocalist Dani Neff. It’s truly a rock show with this band.
Megafauna’s approach is a mixture of subtleties, intricate arrangements, varying tempos, and multiple influences – prog rock, punk, metal, classic rock. Neff’s vocals are the crowning jewel. Yet, there is also the unmistakable rock-goddess brutality, reminding you that the bone-rattling turbulence of Neff’s monster guitar riffs are not necessarily for the faint of heart.
Right on the heels of their recent EP Love Project, the trio is set to release a new full-length, Surreal Estate. Again, there’s some impressive musicianship here. The band has clearly evolved into more sophisticated arrangements, while keeping a solid, heavy rock base.
Don’t miss out on the big show. Lucy the Poodle Productions is throwing a massive Megafauna CD release party Friday night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the indoor stage. The entire bill should guarantee an evening of face-melting, in varying degrees: Burning Avalanche, Tia Carrera, and The Bellmen. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
And don’t leave the earplugs at home.
