One of the oldest restaurants in Austin will celebrate its 60th anniversary on Saturday.
Matt’s El Rancho has been serving Tex-Mex since 1952. Matt himself passed away in 2003. But his wife, Janie Martinez, helped him start the restaurant, and she still plays a role today at age 90. KUT News talked to her about the origins of Matt’s El Rancho.
I had to quit school early because my mother needed help. I stayed with her and always followed her around in the kitchen, and I loved to cook. I just love to cook, and I love to prepare food that looks good, and has color, and tastes good.
