Lawsuits Aim to Force Better Access for Disabled

July 26, 2012 4:57 pm by: Andrew Uhler

Disability rights advocates have filed several lawsuits against the City of Austin, accusing it of discrimination.

Joseph Berra filed the lawsuits, one on behalf of a client who uses a wheelchair.

“She would like to visit this historic South Congress district, the historic Sixth Street area, the up-and-coming East Sixth Street area and other places downtown, but there are woefully insufficient accessible parking spaces on the streets of the city of Austin,” Berra said.

Another suit contends that the city hasn’t provided enough wheelchair routes and ramps on its trail system and municipal pools.

Thirty-three lawsuits were filed across the state. Today is the 22nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
