Execution Tonight Will Use Single Drug

July 18, 2012 4:07 pm by: Andrew Uhler

A man on Death Row will tonight be the first inmate in Texas to be executed under the state’s new single-drug procedure.

Yokamon Hearn was convicted of the 1998 carjacking and murder of Frank Meziere in Dallas. Last week, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said it would use the single drug – pentobarbital - because of a shortage of the two other drugs normally used in lethal injections.

In 2004, Hearn was spared less than an hour before being taken to the Huntsville execution chamber so that a federal appeals court could determine whether he was mentally impaired.

Hearn is to be the sixth Texas inmate executed this year.
