Music is pretty much what we do, for crying out loud. Yeah, that’s an obvious statement coming from someone who works at KUT, but hello? It rules. And nothing is more rewarding than seeing my colleagues’ enthusiasm over music they really enjoy. Case in point: David Brown, esteemed host and producer of Texas Music Matters, who includes local septet Driver Friendly on his list of bands that he’ll happily blare quite loudly over his computer speakers.
They have the kind of charisma that’s essential in power pop, with a few elements of punk and alt.-rock scattered throughout, that makes their music super catchy right at the first listen. Last April’s full-length release, Bury A Dream, is fairly bursting with melodic riffs, horn arrangements, synth and this upbeat, at times frantic intensity. In other words, it’s pretty much the way the band feels pop-rock should be.
Check out Driver Friendly when they play Saturday night at Stubb’s indoor venue, 801 Red River. A very nice triple bill, indeed, with Austin bands Little Radar and Geography. Doors open at 8 p.m. Recommended.
