Dell Expands Software Business by Buying Quest
The Round Rock company historically hasn't produced software. Photo by KUT NewsComputer maker Dell is buying Quest Software for $2.4 billion. The move continues Round Rock-based Dell’s transition away from PCs and toward providing software and services to large companies.
“Until recently Dell had no software; they were dependent on other people,” said John Doggett, a senior lecturer at the McCombs School of Business at UT. “So Dell figured out if they’re going to be competitive, they have to get into the software space, they have to own as much software that’s valuable for customers as possible, because just selling hardware turns them into a commodity player, and they’re not winning that game.”
Doggett says the acquisition boosts Dell’s software research and development presence. Quest makes software for managing databases and backing up data.
