It can be a beautiful thing when a musician steps out into the spotlight after living in the shadow and psuedo-anonymity of being in bands. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Cohen has just made that big leap. On September 25, Cohen releases Overgrown Path, his first record under his own name.

While you may not have heard of Cohen, you’ve still probably heard his work. The Los Angeles native (and current Vermont resident) has quite a long indie-rock resume that includes work with Cass McCombs, The Curtains, Cryptacize and Deerhoof (to name a few).

But with the release of Overgrown Path, Cohen is writing his own musical destiny. The first hint of what we can expect from the album is a song called “Caller No. 99,” and it’s today’s song of the day. With its gentle psychedelia, dancing guitar lines and Cohen’s whistful voice, the track sounds like a long, lost Zombies single. He’s not announcing his arrival as a solo artist with a bang so much as a delightful whisper.
