Ava Luna takes a number of strides toward futuristic directions when it comes funk and soul. True, those two styles are the primary influence, the backbone, of what the New York City-based band creates. However, as familiar as some of the sounds and beats may be, this is nowhere near your dad’s soul grooves of yester-year.

They have an extraordinary way of weaving hybrids of classic soul and funk sounds with more avant-garde noise punk and experimental stylings. And that makes perfect sense; Ava Luna frontman Carlos Hernandez grew up around lots of soul and R&B, being the son of a ‘70s New York soul DJ who also had a punk background. It all flows naturally into his songwriting and vocals.

Ava Luna is currently on tour supporting their album Ice Level, and they’ve got a stop in Austin for a show tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the indoor stage. The bill for the evening includes local bands Wild Moccasins and Lean Hounds. Doors open at 9 p.m. This is one to definitely check out. Recommended.
