Your Ears Do Not Deceive: It’s Cricket Season
The noisy little bugs will be everywhere for a few weeks. Photo courtesy Beth at flickr.com/mirsasha/You might have noticed a familiar cheep-cheep sound in Central Texas recently.
Yes, crickets are back. You might see — and smell — piles of dead ones lying around. They’re a little early this year, possibly because of the wet winter and warm spring.
And it’s not just crickets.
“I’ve been getting calls on high numbers of walking sticks this year in certain pockets,” said Wizzie Brown with the Texas AgriLife Extension in Travis County. “And of course, there are people that are dealing with the leaf katydids that are chirping and driving people absolutely bonkers.”
Brown says the crickets, at least, will probably only stick around in great numbers for a few weeks.
