The Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow and the Austin Classical Guitar Society will present the 1927 silent masterpieceThe Unknown starring Lon Chaney Sr. and Joan Crawford with a live score at Laguna Gloria on Friday June 22nd at 7:30. KUT’s Views and Brews took a moment before the special event to unpack the intricacies of this bizarre and brilliant film and find out what goes into scoring a film from almost a century ago.

KUT’s Rebecca McInroy hosted Tim League of the Alamo Draft House, Matthew Hinsley of the Austin Classical Guitar Society, guitarists Benoit Albert and Randy Avers, the European-based ultra-inventive duo Les Freres Meduses, and violinist Will Fedkenheuer of the Miro Quartet for a night of movies, music and great conversation.

Where and how was this film discovered? What is it about the film that inspired two European-based guitar virtuosos to spend a year scoring it together while living countries apart? How does the score impact our emotional response to film? Those are just some of the ideas we explored at the Cactus Cafe last Tuesday June 19th. Listen back to the discussion by clicking on the link at the top of this post, and watch a video of the first part of the film being scored live!
