The Loop: Solar Shield
Beat music is a form that has grown out of various strains of electronic music, right in our backyard. Several local collectives are going strong with monthly live showcases and online compilations, and Texas Music Matters wants to shine a light on the scene. Each week, we’ll highlight a different artist and their music, and we’ll let them tell their own stories in order to put beat music into a Texas perspective—we’re calling it The Loop.
When Chris and Ian McDowell received circuit boards and other electronic components for Christmas one year, it sparked a creative fire that the brothers still share. Chris and Ian have since moved on from electronic experiments to create their own original music under the name Solar Shield. Their songs are a little bit more sophisticated than those early days, revealing a love of ’80s-style synthesizers and R&B-influenced sounds, but they haven’t lost that sense of anything-goes glee. On this edition of The Loop, the brothers talk about their parents’ role in their music, their fraternal bond, and that first electronic Christmas.
