Leeds, England folk-pop quintet The Dunwells recently stopped by KUT’s Studio 1A for a session with our very own Jay Trachtenberg, but the band members certainly aren’t strangers to Texas.

The band decamped from dreary northern England to the dry, sunny Hill Country to record their recently-released debut record Blind Sighted Faith at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Recording Studio. Last year, the group made a big splash at the Folk Alliance International conference in Memphis, gaining some influential fans like Cameron Crowe and the epistolaric music industry blogger Bob Lefsetz.

It was a bit of an odd fit because while the group uses folk and Americana as a core, they have a decidedly more rocky sound than your average neo-folk band. But there’s still plenty of pickin’ and great harmonies for the folkies to chew on. Take, for instance, today’s song of the day, “I Could Be a King,” which was recorded live in Studio 1A. It’s a rollicking performance, and the band’s Englishness really comes out.
