Yes, the Couch was conceived on a couch. Or rather, through a series of conversations among a trio of friends who all attended Texas State University in San Marcos. Taylor Wilkins, Jud Johnson, and Kyle Robarge have been together almost five years, and their recent move to Austin has attracted another set of fans to their raucous rock.
While starting out as the quintessential college band–playing house parties on weekends among friends–the Couch have greatly increased their profile over the past year. Just six months ago came the release of the band’s first full-length record, Old & Touchin’ Blue. The Couch subsequently generated tons of praise (including a “12 For 2012″ nod from yours truly), and they’ve played shows with the likes of Toadies and the Bright Light Social Hour. In the meantime, the band has added a female voice to the boys’ club–Sara Houser, who not only lends her vocals to the mix but also a bevy of instrumental skills, like piano, keyboards, and guitar.
And the Couch aren’t wasting any time. On June 5th, the band will release a pair of singles as a follow-up to their critically-acclaimed debut. They’re celebrating this release with a show at the Mohawk that night as well, receiving help from local friends Summer Swells and the Sour Notes. We’ve got one of these singles as today’s song of the day, the anthemic “Oh, Libby.” The song charges with a head full of steam–just like the band that created it.
