Mercy, but those harmonies are the bomb. Yes, I said it. The Carper Family is an Austin Music Minute favorite.
Bassist Melissa Carper, guitarist Jenn Miori and fiddle player Beth Chrisman first performed together during a happy hour gig at the Hole In the Wall in 2009. By then, each was already a seasoned musician – they’d led their own bands and performed with some of the best musicians around, so it was understood that everyone was bringing something great to the table. And, as it turns out, it’s a match made in heaven.
This collaboration is a fresh and refreshing allegiance of young talent with a great reverence for the artistry of classic country, bluegrass and swing traditions. On top of that, they absolutely kill on their three-part harmonies. They are also introducing new – and younger – audiences to music they may not have been exposed to before.
Perhaps the women of The Carper Family may not be sisters by birth, but they definitely are through song. The trio begins their June residency at the Cactus Cafe with a show tonight. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the evening starts out with a performance by another band to keep an eye on, local string outfit The Austin Steamers. Recommended.
