The Department of Defense has released the name of a Texas soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Roberto Loeza of El Paso was killed in combat on May 25 in Logar province in eastern Afghanistan.

Loeza was based at Fort Bliss. A funeral Mass will be held there today, followed by burial at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors.

Loeza enlisted in the Army in 2002 after graduating from Mountain View High School in El Paso. He served one tour in Iraq. This was his third in Afghanistan.

Loeza leaves behind his wife and two children along with his parents, brother and sisters. One of his sisters told the El Paso ABC affiliate that Loeza was scheduled to come home from Afghanistan in a month.

The Department of Defense confirms that as of June 7, 6,464 U.S. service members have died in Iraq and Afghanistan; 575 were from Texas.
