Speeds on New Toll Road Could Be 85 MPH

June 7, 2012 4:20 pm by: Andrew Uhler

A new toll road between Austin and San Antonio could have the state’s highest speed limit at 85 mph.

Last year, the Texas Legislature upped the maximum speed limit for future highways from 80 to 85 mph. Transportation officials are considering the higher speed limit on that stretch of Highway 130.

Mark Cross with the Texas Department of Transportation says they’ll start by looking at the road’s topography and access points.

“We’ll also look at the speed of other traffic on the segments of State Highway 130 that are already open or adjacent to these segments,” Cross said. “We’ll test and see what those drivers are moving at and use that as a factor as well.”

Cross says it will take one to three months to finish the tests and open that stretch of the tollway to the public.
