Ruby Jane Smith has been playing the fiddle since she was two years old. Yeah, you heard right, two. It was clear very early when Smith was a toddler in Columbus, Mississippi, that she had a gift when it came to stringed instruments. Inheriting a love of bluegrass and country music, she began accumulating awards for her playing all around the country before she was ten years old.

At ten, Smith became the youngest fiddle player to play at the Grand Ole Opry. She picked up the mandolin and guitar and quickly mastered those instruments as well.

Smith has spent the last few years recording and touring since she moved to Austin. Willie Nelson, Mike Snider, and Dale Watson are just a few from the list of greats she’s played with.

On Tuesday, June 19th, Smith will be releasing her next album, Celebrity (empire of emptiness). She took time to stop by Studio 1a to preview some of the new songs.
