Although it’s a gem of a song, it’s a shame that Loudon Wainwright III is best known for his novelty tune “Dead Skunk (in the Middle of the Road),” since he has such an impressive repertoire besides. Differing from self-effacing humor to touching and deeply personal, Wainwright’s songwriting inhabits a very unique genre of storytelling folk.

His most recent album Older Than My Old Man Now is thoroughly on the personal side. Being older than his father ever was, Wainwright has been thinking about mortality and nostalgia, two of the subjects the album focuses on. He will be playing here in Austin at the good ol’ Cactus Cafe the 23rd and 24th — don’t miss out.
