Austin’s been giving away millions of dollars to businesses that bring jobs to the city. But are we giving away too much?
Vicky Garza of the Austin Business Journal joins KUT’s Andy Uhler to discuss the city’s financial incentives for private companies.
Garza:
Over the past eight years, the [Austin City] Council reworked its incentives policy so that they base projects on a number of factors such as the number of jobs it will create or the capital investment the companies will be making. And so far, over those past few years, only 13 companies have received incentives.
These are large national and international companies that are considering Austin as just one of the locations to relocate to. So these incentives will gives us an advantage over the other locations that they’re looking at.
The company that created the most number of jobs was Samsung. And they had also received the largest number of incentives.
