F1 Organizers Get Crowd Permit for Race

June 5, 2012 4:14 pm by: Nathan Bernier

Austin’s Formula One organizers won an important permit today that will allow them to move ahead with plans for an F1 race in November.

Travis County Commissioners voted to grant a so-called “mass gathering” permit, which will allow 120,000 people to converge on the track in southeastern Travis County.

That was despite concerns from some people who live around the track.

“I believe you should deny the permit,” said Cathy Olive, who lives in the area. “If this were a rock concert or a rave, I believe you would be denying the permit based solely on its safety and incompleteness.”

The permit application (PDF) included details on how race organizers plan to move people into and out of the Circuit of the Americas. The plan includes transporting 70,000 people in on shuttle buses and building enough parking for 22,000 vehicles.
