The state Republican convention kicked off today in Fort Worth. The event is supposed to excite the GOP base in Texas ahead of the general election. But the convention took an early confrontational tone.
Because of the delay in state primaries, instead a slate of GOP candidates with delegates rallying behind them, this year a handful of runoffs still remain to select some winners.
The highest-profile race pits Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst against former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz for U.S. Senate. Many delegates wore stickers identifying them as supporters of one or the other.
The split in support among them was evident as Gov. Rick Perry delivered his morning speech.
“And we need more conservative Texans in Washington D.C. Including my friend David Dewhurst. Texas works — Texas works. Our job growth proves it.”
The sounds that followed the mention of Dewhurst might have been the crowd saying CRUUUUZ, as in Ted Cruz, or even DEEEEW for Dewhurst. But it sure sounded like booing.
Dewhurst is set to address the convention tomorrow morning. A video of Perry’s speech is below.
