Austin Music Map: Listener Sends Us To Church

KUT’s Texas Music Matters is partnering with the national Localore project to create the Austin Music Map: a yearlong effort to go beyond the well-traveled streets of the Austin music scene in search of the hidden places where music is being made. We want your help discovering and documenting these places. To find out how to get involved, visit austinmusicmap.com or call our hotline with stories and tips: (512) 861-8266.

Last week on Texas Music Matters, we aired an interview with Greg Adkins of The Gospel According to Austin, a local organization that discovers and promotes gospel groups who worship and perform here in the Live Music Capital. He told us a story about Mt. Zion Baptist Church, which is one of his favorite places to hear music on Sunday mornings.

We put out a call to listeners afterward, asking for tips: which other Austin churches feature rocking praise music during their services? Sure enough, a call came in, recommending we visit Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksville:

We’ll be headed out there this Sunday to meet some of the congregants and sit in on a service.

If you have other recommendations—for gospel churches or other favorite musical spots around the city—we want to hear from you. Call (512) 861-8266 and help us build the Austin Music Map.

You can also contribute photos to our growing Flickr pool. Members have already submitted images of the Boyd Vance Theater at The Carver Museum, the Victory Grill, The Carousel Lounge, Rio Rita, The Scoot Inn, Club El Calentano, and more. Some of the images we collect will be curated and featured on our interactive website, when it launches in August.
