APD Says Fatal Chase Followed Protocol

June 18, 2012 5:13 pm by: Wells Dunbar

Austin police are defending their conduct in a high speed chase that ended in a bystander’s death Friday. Assistant Chief Shawn Mannix said today that officers followed proper protocol.

“There’s no reason to believe that policy wasn’t followed,” Mannix said. “However, in any of these cases we do an extensive review, and that review is taking place right now.”

Thirty-two-year-old James Williford was hit and killed by a Ford F-250 driven by Reynaldo Victor Hernandez Jr. Hernandez was running from police when he raced through a red light and crashed into Williford’s car.

Hernandez was charged with first-degree murder along with three other felonies. Bail was set at $1.21 million.
