People often ask how I find out about bands around town. Oftentimes, this is how it happens. Purely by chance. Some research online, coming across local show announcements, clicking on a few links that you find intriguing, and bam. Make the first contact.
In this case, there was a bit of confusion at first, on the part of Under the Sun‘s vocalist and guitarist Erik Buerklee when I inquired about his band’s music. Not everybody’s heard of the Austin Music Minute. When I chatted with Buerklee on the phone recently, one of the first things he asked was, “So…are you local?”
Indeed, the AMM is local, and so is Under the Sun. Buerklee and his band mates – guitarist/vocalist Jaron Kucera, bassist Chris Spencer and drummer Chris Young – have been playing together for only about a year, but with a sound this bold and massive, they won’t go unnoticed. It’s a pretty basic formula: Straight up, groovy, heavy-duty, guitar-driven rock ‘n’ roll, high volume and carrying a totally classic late ’60s/early ’70s vibe, an homage to influences like Free, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Sabbath.
Don’t miss their next gig. Under the Sun has a show Tuesday night at Frank, 407 Colorado. Starting out the evening is the Eric Wilson Band and Downtown Sound. Doors open 9 p.m. Check it out.
