When one thinks of a mixtape, the average person will probably think of a lovesick (but kind of cool) dork, working in sweaty secrecy, trying to come up with the perfect blend of songs to win the heart of a girl that probably has no idea he exists (think John Cusack in the 80s). SoCal duo TV Girl doesn’t make that kind of mixtape.
TV Girl is Brad Petering and Trung Ngo, a duo that crafts tunes from odds and ends of old songs. It’s less sampling, and more like a kind of aural decoupage. Back in 2010 the group got some love from Pitchfork for their self-released single “If You Want It” which took its base from Todd Rundgren’s “Hello It’s Me.”
Unfortunately that song is no longer available due to some not-so-subtle prodding from Warner Music Group. But TV Girl does have a new record out called (in true mixtape fashion) The Wild, The Innocent The TV Shuffle that’s available on Bandcamp right now. Despite the record’s name, you probably won’t get any clips of the Boss’s bellow, but you will get 15 tracks of breezy, sunny music like today’s song of the day, “I Wonder Who She’s Kissing Now.”
