There’s no mincing of words with local quartet The Sweet Nuthin’. Up front, they’ll let you know there’s no B.S. Just sweet, sweet rock ‘n’ roll, made quite evident by their new self-titled five-track EP. It gets right to the point.
The band was actually borne out of friendships between members of two Austin bands, The Steps and The Daze. Both had been doing quite well for themselves; The Steps had toured England and Japan, and had their day at the ACL Fest – twice, while The Daze was selected for the feature film Bandslam (2009), along with having a Daze song included on the film’s soundtrack alongside David Bowie and Wilco. Daze guitarist Evan Charles recognized all the talent going on, and thought there’d be a great match here somewhere. He formed the new band last year, with bandmate Chris Ritchie on bass, Steps drummer Z Lynch, and a New York City transplant new to the scene, guitarist Colin Peters.
They prefer to make their music with this simple formula: Less is more. And it serves them well, driven mainly by guitars and tight, solid rhythms. No nonsense.
Be sure to catch The Sweet Nuthin’ at their EP release show Saturday night at The Swan Dive, 651 Red River. Joining the party are The White White Lights, The Happen-Ins, and Nic Armstrong. Get there after 9 p.m. Smokin’ hot.
