On the Move: Matt Reilly

According to KUT Assistant Music Director Matt Reilly, executing live, in-studio music performances in our current workspace has become an art form.

“We’re spread out over a couple of different floors and our air studio is two floors above basement studio 1A,” he explains. “When we have live acts in the studio I usually go upstairs to take the board from Jay Trachtenberg while he hits the news, which buys him three minutes to run downstairs to start a session.”

It’s a tricky dance that doesn’t leave room for error.

Matt adds that the current layout of the KUT offices makes it tough for the music staff to find each other and that you need to know exactly where to look for someone and at what time. “We’re in these little warrens and we’re mixed in with KLRU-TV and college staff so it can be a little confusing sometimes. You have to be on top of your scheduling.”

In the KUT Public Media Studios Studio 1A will be on the same floor as the on-air studio and the music staff’s work space.

“Right now you hear us, but you never see us. The new building will change all that,” he says. “Most importantly, the new space will allow us to engage more with the public. You’ll be able to find us now.”
