There’s gotta be something in the water up in Denton. Pound for pound the little college town north of DFW fights well-above its weight class (and wins) in terms of sheer volume of talent it produces. One of those bands is Matthew and the Arrogant Sea.

The group is headed by singer and songwriter Matthew Gray. Joining him are guitarist Hunter Johnston, percussionist Bobak Lotfipour and bassist Robert Paine. Gray started the band as a solo project in 2006, but quickly realized he need the oomph that only a full band could offer. The group’s debut 2008 full-length album Family Family Family Meets The Magic Christian was hailed by the Dallas Observer as one of the best records of the year. Touring with bands like Asobi Seksu, Centro-matic, The Black Angels, Warpaint, Clem Snide and The Starlight Mints, and praise from outlets like Paste, Pop Matters and Prefix raised the band’s profile even further.

Matthew and the Arrogant Sea will be at the Mohawk this Saturday. To give you a primer on what you might expect, we’ve chosen “At the Wheel Fighting Elvis” as today’s song of the day. Strange title maybe, cool tune, definitely.
