Wildflower Center to Build Children’s Garden

April 25, 2012 6:03 pm by: Andrew Uhler

Luci Baines Johnson and her husband have donated $1 million to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in southwest Austin.

The donation will be used to help build a garden designed for children.

The former president’s daughter says the garden will feature a maze, an elevated walkway and giant bird nests. Next year will mark 100 years since Lady Bird Johnson’s birth.

“We believe the most fitting present we could give mother’s centennial is to take the inheritance she made possible for us and give it back to the University she so loved,” Luci Johnson said.

Groundbreaking for the new garden is scheduled next year. The Texas Legislature has declared 2012 Lady Bird Johnson Centennial Year.
