Amidst the hustle and chaos of SXSW back in March, I ran into Ram Vela, frontman of local quartet Whitman, at the Austin Town Hall day party in East Austin. His band would be playing later in the day, but he didn’t hesitate to graciously hand me a download card with a couple of preview tracks from their soon-to-be released – make that, unleashed – album Weekends. And, knowing Whitman, the name made perfect sense.
Chances are good that when you think of “weekends,” you think: Good times. Party times. The opposite of having to go to work, or school. Of course, you have Whitman unabashedly reinforcing what the LP title implies. It’s a spectacular display of rock and power pop on a rampage. Vela and keyboardist/guitarist Kyle Johnson have been writing songs together since 2003, crafting straightforward, heartfelt, high-energy rock songs telling tales of life’s crazy adventures – no doubt ripe material for for Vela and Johnson, who both grew up in small towns, did lots of traveling, and played lots of rock. Perfect.
So, in keeping with tradition, Whitman is celebrating the release of Weekends with a big party release show tonight at The ND, located at 5th and Brushy. They have an incredibly solid line-up for the night with Golden Bear, The Couch and Slowtrain. Get there around 9 p.m. Be prepared for more good times. Recommended.
