Transit Report: Austin’s OK but Spotty

April 26, 2012 4:54 pm by: Ben Philpott

A ranking out today says Austin has one of the 25 best transit systems among major U.S. cities.

But that doesn’t mean the system is great. The urban living website Walk Score says Austin has “some or minimal” transit options.

Matt Lerner, co-founder of Walk Score, says the score reflects the hit-or-miss nature of Austin’s transit system.

“In a place like Austin the answer is really, it depends on where you live,” Lerner said. “I’m looking at a place here near Sixth Street in Austin, which I know is where all the tourists love to come visit. And it has a walk score of 92, which makes it a walker’s paradise. And it has a transit score of 72, which means that it has excellent transit.”

But he says as you leave Austin’s urban core, that score drops rapidly.

New York City topped the transit ranking list.
