It’s not an unusual thing for most Austin musicians to be in more than one band. I’d lose my head because it’s difficult to keep track of everything. but it’s a common scenario. Guess you could say I was left with that impression after recently exchanging messages with drummer Charlie Jones, who has more than his share of gigs goin’ down. But it’s because of people like Jones that I find out about a lot of bands, such as The Black Owl Society.

Featuring Jones on drums, guitarist Nate Boff, and bassist and lead vocalist Buffalo, The Black Owl Society deals a pretty mean roots and blues-rock jam at the darker end of the twelve-bar boogie/rock ‘n’ roll spectrum, maybe leaning a bit more on the rock side but with plenty of down and dirty blues riffs. While there’s no doubt they get a lot of inspiration from Texas-style blues, their influences are a little broader. Collectively, the trio has an impressive resume, including Buffalo’s experience as an original member of Native American family band Indigenous.

That dirty blues/rock sound keeps me coming back. Make plans to check out The Black Owl Society when they open for Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real‘s CD release show Friday night at Antone’s, 213 W. 5th St. Doors open at 8 p.m., and The Black Owl Society gets the music going at 9 p.m., followed by Austin band Treetop Sailors at 10 p.m. Lukas Nelson headlines. Check it all out, peeps.
